New York City is on pace for its safest year in recorded history, according to new NYPD data released Monday. Violent crime dropped nearly 13% in July, making the first seven months of 2026 the safest on record. The department reported declines in murders, shootings, robberies, burglaries, auto thefts, grand larcenies, felony assaults, and retail theft, while transit crime rose 10.9%, largely due to felony assaults and thefts of unattended property. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited the department's data-driven policing strategy and the work of officers throughout a busy summer of major events.
