Imagine getting paid and never collecting the money! While reviewing a client's books, I found several checks to a vendor that hadn't cleared in over a year. We contacted the vendor. Turns out, he never deposited them. Lesson: Always make sure checks you receive actually clear. A paid invoice doesn't mean the money is in your bank.
