UK: Patients in A&E will be able to demand an urgent second opinion if their condition deteriorates while waiting for or receiving care. Under plans announced on Monday, Martha’s Rule will be extended to every emergency department in England, including waiting rooms. Patients and relatives will be able to call a dedicated number if someone’s condition worsens and they fear their concerns are being ignored. The scheme was introduced following the death of Martha Mills, 13, from sepsis at King’s College Hospital in 2021. Her parents repeatedly raised concerns about her deterioration which were not acted upon. A coroner concluded she would probably have survived had she been transferred to intensive care earlier.
