France: Tens of thousands of students, teachers and trade union members are taking to the streets across France today in the largest day of demonstrations since nationwide unrest over conditions in schools began last month. A student union says 1,800 high schools are blockaded or closed and 90% of universities are also blockaded, while the government says 891 schools have classes fully or partially suspended. Police have used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse protesters, with more than 5,000 people arrested since the unrest began, the vast majority of them minors. The protests have increasingly descended into violent clashes, with some schools damaged or set on fire.
