UK: Prime Minister Andy Burnham has faced Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch at his first Prime Minister’s Questions since taking office. Badenoch challenged Burnham over government spending and rising borrowing costs, accusing him of being a “people-pleaser” and pressing him on whether taxes would rise. Burnham defended his record, saying his “first moves were to cut tax”, pointing to the removal of VAT from household electricity bills and cuts to business rates for pubs and other venues. However, he declined to rule out tax rises at the upcoming Budget, saying he would not “write the Budget” at the despatch box.
