UK: Over 1,000 flights were said to have been cancelled across the UK following today’s major air traffic control failure, affecting tens of thousands of passengers, with further delays expected on Wednesday. The fault affected NATS’ flight-processing system and caused widespread disruption at airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham. Arrivals were restricted as the disruption worsened, leaving some aircraft unable to depart overseas airports. NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe has apologised and said there will be a full investigation into what went wrong. Ryanair and Wizz Air have strongly criticised NATS, with Ryanair calling for Rolfe to resign and Wizz Air saying the organisation is “not fit for purpose” in its current form.
