Canada: A police officer was seriously wounded after a 29-year-old man opened fire outside a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, at the start of Yom Kippur on Sunday evening, Canada’s provincial police watchdog said. The officer is said to be recovering in intensive care. The gunman suffered life-threatening injuries in the exchange. Investigators estimate 20 to 30 shots were fired, with homes and vehicles struck. A watchdog spokesperson said the synagogue may have been deliberately targeted, but stressed that this remained speculation.
