UK: Green Party leader Zack Polanski has declared himself an “anti-Zionist” and declined to affirm Israel’s right to exist at a heated Jewish community hustings ahead of the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. “I am an anti-Zionist, which I know is difficult for people to hear in this room,” Polanski told the event, organised by the Board of Deputies and London Jewish Forum. Asked whether Zionism was racism, Polanski said: “If you’re defining Zionism as a displacement genocide, which is how, in practice, Zionism has become, then that is racism.” His remarks prompted boos, heckling and shouts of “shame” from members of the audience. Polanski also described the war in Gaza as a “genocide” and argued that Jewish people who characterise such criticism of Israel as antisemitic are making themselves less safe.
