Israel: More than 40 Chabad-Lubavitch yeshiva students were reportedly detained by Military Police at Ben Gurion Airport this morning on suspicion of evading military service, after returning from a year of study in New York. According to Israeli media reports, the Military Police had advance information about their arrival and deployed additional officers to the airport. Some of those detained have reportedly since been released. Those willing to enlist will reportedly receive a suspended sentence and begin their military service immediately, while those who refuse face being sent to military prison. In an interview with Kol Barama radio, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed opposition to the arrests of ultra-Orthodox draft evaders describing them as a “deliberate attempt to harm the process of drafting Haredim without coercion”. However, he added that those who are not studying in yeshivas should enlist. Join EJN: https://wa.me/447443160130?text=Hi!%20I%20would%20like%20to%20subscribe%20to%20the%20EJN.%20My%20name%20is:%20
