Israel: Masked Israeli settlers have reportedly attacked a delegation of European diplomats and an American photojournalist in two separate incidents in the West Bank. Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was filmed being beaten and repeatedly kicked near Ramallah on Friday, suffering serious injuries, including a nearly severed finger that required surgery. Separately, masked settlers allegedly attacked diplomats from Belgium, France and Poland, damaging a Belgian diplomatic vehicle. The Israeli military condemned the incident as a “severe act of violence”, while police launched an investigation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned extremist settler violence as a “scourge” that must be eradicated. However, when questioned about the attack on Levine, he expressed doubts despite video footage, saying: “I don’t know. We’re checking it out.” Netanyahu’s office also urged caution over reports of the attack on diplomats, pending the police investigation, while stressing that violence against diplomats is “unacceptable”.
