UK: Around 700 prisoners are being released early from jails across England and Wales today as the Government’s expanded early-release scheme comes into force. Around 4,500 inmates are expected to be released in stages over the coming year to ease severe prison overcrowding. Under the new rules, many eligible prisoners can be released after serving only one-third of their sentence. Those released remain on licence and can be recalled to prison if they breach their conditions.
