Nepal: The death toll from the floods and mudslides on the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to at least 157, with more than 800 people still missing, according to Nepalese authorities. Many of those missing are foreign tourists, with Nepal’s tourist board listing more than 100 Indians, 54 Americans and 33 Britons among those unaccounted for. The region is a popular destination for pilgrims and trekkers. In Tibet, Chinese state media reported that at least three people had been killed and 265 remain missing. Authorities initially believed an earthquake may have triggered a landslide, but the US Geological Survey now says the seismic activity detected in the area was instead generated by the landslide itself.
