Gaza: The IDF carried out heavy strikes in Gaza City this morning, reportedly in support of a Palestinian militia attempting to capture a senior Hamas official. Defence Minister Israel Katz later confirmed that a senior Hamas member had been captured. According to reports, he is the head of Hamas’s General Security, the terror group’s top internal security apparatus. Palestinian media claimed that a “special Israeli unit” infiltrated the western part of Gaza City. In an attempt to secure the unit after it was discovered by Hamas operatives, the IDF carried out shelling and airstrikes in the area, the reports claimed, killing at least three and wounding eight. The IDF confirmed striking “a number of targets” in Gaza, saying the strikes were intended to “remove threats to security forces”, without specifying whether Israeli forces were involved.
