Germany: The former head of Germany’s BND intelligence service has been arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason. August Hanning is accused of illegally acquiring classified documents and selling at least some of them to a foreign power, in potentially the most serious spy scandal in German history. He served as president of the BND, or Federal Intelligence Service, from December 1998 to November 2005. Police have also arrested his former chief of staff, named as Manfred D, who is suspected of supplying sensitive data to Mr Hanning after he left the agency in return for payments.
