UK: Robert Jenrick claims a Reform UK government would cut £50bn from the welfare bill, in what it's describing as the biggest shake-up in a generation. The party’s Treasury spokesperson says the plans would see almost three million people have disability and sickness payments withdrawn or changed. Under the proposals, PIP and the health element of Universal Credit would be abolished for working-age adults and replaced with a regularly reviewed health security allowance for the “gravely ill and severely challenged”. Jenrick says 6.9 million people receive disability benefits, but argues “this is not an epidemic of broken backs and lost limbs”, pointing to a tripling since 2002 in the proportion of working-age claimants receiving support for mental health and behavioural conditions.
