Australia: A 43-year-old man has been charged over Monday’s alleged deliberate vehicle attack on MP Helen Haines, 65, outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Police say they believe Haines was deliberately targeted. The suspect, identified as Brendan Nugent, faces charges including intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Nugent’s father revealed that he and his partner have been friends with Haines for more than 20 years, describing the attack as “devastating and unfathomable”. He said they would cooperate fully with police. Haines, who reportedly lost a leg following the attack, remains in a critical but stable condition.
