Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed that he spoke directly with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa shortly after Israeli airstrikes on Damascus in July 2025, in what is believed to be the first publicly reported conversation between leaders of the two countries. Speaking at a Likud conference for the Druze community, Netanyahu said he called al-Sharaa following deadly sectarian violence involving Druze in southern Syria. “It was a very short and very sharp conversation. And the slaughter stopped,” Netanyahu said. Israel and Syria, which have no diplomatic relations, have since held talks over a possible security agreement.
