UK: Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has accused Prime Minister Andy Burnham of putting pressure on King Charles after suggesting Britain could be open to formally apologising for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. Badenoch said Burnham had been “putting his foot in his mouth since he became prime minister” and warned that his comments could place the King in a difficult position during his Caribbean tour. She argued that former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s expression of “deep sorrow and regret” over Britain’s role in slavery should be sufficient. Buckingham Palace has indicated that the King’s upcoming Commonwealth speech has not been changed and that he is not expected to issue a formal apology.
