France: Around 550,000 people took part in nationwide protests on Saturday, according to France’s interior minister, as violent clashes erupted in several cities. The demonstrations, which began as student protests over education conditions, have expanded to include trade unions, farmers and members of the Yellow Vest movement. Around 400 people have been arrested, with vehicles set alight, shops looted and Lyon’s tourism office torched. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon as clashes broke out in Paris and other major cities. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and appealed for calm, while Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu vowed that the government would not be intimidated.
