Israel: Israelis are heading to the polls today in what is being described as one of the most consequential elections in the country’s history, with Benjamin Netanyahu facing a serious challenge to his leadership. The election is Israel’s first since the October 7 Hamas attacks in 2023. An unprecedented 70,000 Israelis have reportedly flown home from abroad to cast their ballots. Opinion polls suggest a closely fought contest between Netanyahu’s right-wing and religious bloc and the opposition’s so-called “change bloc”, led by former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot and including Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Lieberman and Yair Golan, who are united in their goal of removing Netanyahu despite their political differences. Neither bloc is projected to secure the 61 seats needed for a parliamentary majority, raising the possibility of weeks or months of coalition negotiations. Polling stations opened at 7am Israeli time and will close at 10pm, when the first exit polls are expected. Join EJN: https://wa.me/447443160130?t
