UK: The government has announced plans to scrap standing charges on household gas bills, in a move expected to save the average household around £45 a year. Chancellor John Healey has asked energy regulator Ofgem to introduce the change in 2027, or as soon as possible afterwards. Standing charges currently cost the average household around £108 annually, regardless of how much gas is used. However, the costs will instead be added to the price of gas itself, meaning households that use more gas could end up paying more. The Treasury estimates that around 60% of households will benefit from the change. Join EJN:
