UK: The Covid-19 Inquiry has found that government failures allowed the virus to spread “like wildfire” through care homes during the pandemic. The report said the care sector was treated as “something of an afterthought” and rejected former Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s claim that a “protective ring” had been placed around care homes. It highlighted shortages of protective equipment, inadequate testing and failures in discharging hospital patients into care homes. The inquiry also found that restrictions on visits caused enormous harm to residents and their loved ones, although it placed responsibility for these restrictions on care homes themselves. More than 43,000 deaths involving Covid-19 were recorded in UK care homes between March 2020 and July 2022.
