Israel: Voting has now closed in Israel’s general election, with the first exit polls suggesting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party will remain the largest party, but neither his bloc nor the opposition has secured a clear majority. According to Channel 13’s exit poll, Likud is projected to win 25 seats, narrowly ahead of Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party on 23. However, the opposition bloc led by Eisenkot is projected to win 53 seats, compared with 50 for Netanyahu’s right-wing and religious bloc. Arab-led parties are projected to secure a record 17 seats, leaving neither camp with a clear path to the 61 seats needed to form a government. The projections point to a possible political deadlock, although official results have yet to be announced and vote counting is now under way.
