Israel: President Isaac Herzog has urged political parties to approach coalition talks with an open mind and do everything possible to avoid another election, after yesterday’s vote left neither Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition with a clear path to forming a government. According to the latest official count, Netanyahu’s right-wing and religious bloc is projected to win 53 seats, compared with 48 for the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot. Arab-led parties are projected to secure a record 19 seats. A majority of 61 seats is needed to form a government. The full vote count is due to be released tomorrow afternoon, with the final official results expected on 4 November. Herzog will then begin consultations on forming a government.
