Nepal: The death toll from the flash flood has risen to at least 669, with more than 2,400 people still missing, according to local authorities. A major rescue operation is under way at the Trishuli-3 ‘A’ hydropower site, where more than 100 workers are believed to be trapped in tunnels buried beneath the mud. Nepal’s energy minister says rescuers have successfully drilled into a cable tunnel and found no debris inside, although they have not yet established contact with anyone. Air is now being pumped into the tunnel as teams try to detect whether anyone is nearby. If weather conditions allow, rescuers hope to work through the night to widen the opening enough for a person to enter, before attempting to reach the facility’s larger tunnels tomorrow.
