UK: Chancellor John Healey has clarified that Labour is not committing to reducing the welfare bill before the next general election, following confusion over comments he made earlier today. Speaking to BBC Radio 4 this morning, Healey appeared to promise a reduction in benefits spending before the election, but Downing Street subsequently insisted that no deadline had been set. Speaking to Channel 4 News this afternoon, Healey reportedly said: “It’s not correct to say that we’re going to bring this welfare bill down in this Parliament.” It comes after Wednesday’s Budget forecast that welfare spending would rise from £353 billion this year to £431 billion by 2031/32.
