🇸🇾 — NEW: A Damascus court sentenced ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia Tuesday, convicting him of premeditated murder, torture, arbitrary detention and crimes against humanity. • Assad’s brother Maher al-Assad and cousin Atef Najib, the former Daraa security chief whose forces tortured teenagers in 2011 and helped ignite Syria’s uprising, were also sentenced to death.
