Fort Myers Woman Arrested After Alleged Attack On ICE Officers Florida law enforcement has arrested Maria Del Carmen Negrete Raya, 39, after she was accused of attacking ICE officers during an immigration stop in Fort Myers last week. Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrest Thursday morning. She faces three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer. According to the AG’s office, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers tried to stop a vehicle registered to a non-U.S. citizen on August 19. Occupants fled. Officials say Negrete Raya then charged the officers’ vehicle, tried to get inside, and punched and kicked them. One officer was struck in the groin and had minor injuries. ICE disengaged to de-escalate. State officials say she is a Mexican national who entered the United States without inspection and filed an asylum application in 2023. She is being held at the Lee County Jail. Prosecutors say the charges can be reclassified as second-degree felonies because of her status as an unauthorized alien, carrying up to 15 years in prison per count. The case was handled by the Office of Statewide Prosecution, Florida Highway Patrol, ICE, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Uthmeier: “Florida will not tolerate anyone, especially those who shouldn’t even be in our country, attacking our law enforcement officers.” Florida Scoop’s Take: Interfering with a lawful stop and putting hands on officers is a fast way to turn a video moment into felony charges.
