Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is warning that expanding the county's transit system may require higher taxes, according to a memo first reported by the Miami Herald. The memo says the county faces a $7.6 billion funding gap over the next 20 years to build, operate and maintain the remaining five corridors of the SMART transit program. Officials cite rising construction and labor costs, along with the loss of major state transit funding. Among the options outlined are doubling the county's transportation sales surtax from 0.5% to 1% and creating a dedicated property tax for transit projects. County commissioners are expected to discuss the proposal at their July 21 meeting. --- 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Florida news: 🗞️ JOIN The Florida Scoop on WhatsApp: https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=17868092003&text=Subscribe
