*DeSantis Calls Flock Cameras “Out Of Control”* Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that license plate reader cameras in Florida have gone too far and need new limits. Speaking at Florida International University in Miami, DeSantis said Flock cameras are no longer just being used for things like tolling by plate. “It’s now being used, not for tolling by plate or things like that, but for actual criminal surveillance,” he said. DeSantis said he still wants police and sheriffs to have tools that help catch criminals. He also said he does not want Florida to become a “surveillance state.” Most of the cameras are run by local police departments and sheriff’s offices, not the state. DeSantis said he has asked for a review of how state agencies use the technology and wants lawmakers to put stronger privacy rules in place. Flock cameras photograph passing plates and let agencies search when and where a vehicle was last seen. Supporters say they help recover stolen cars and solve serious crimes. Critics point to recent Florida cases where officers were accused of using the system to track people who were not under investigation. *Florida Scoop’s Take:* People want stolen cars found fast. They also do not want every trip logged with no real guardrails. That tension is why this is blowing up across the state.
