*Surfside Approves Permanent Memorial For 98 Lives Lost At Champlain Towers* Surfside has given final approval to a permanent memorial honoring the 98 people killed when Champlain Towers South collapsed on June 24, 2021. The memorial will sit along the 88th Street beach access, just north of the former building site. The centerpiece is a water feature with two clasped hands, along with the names of all 98 victims. Near the Collins Avenue entrance, 13 Pillars of Light will hold rebar and debris from the original building. Commissioners approved the redesign at an Aug. 6 special meeting. Officials also voted to remove planned concrete slabs and rebar from the park floor after families and residents raised safety and emotional concerns. The final design is now public after more than five years of planning. A construction start date has not been announced. *Florida Scoop’s Take:* A permanent place to remember them has been a long time coming. May their memories be a blessing.
