*Miami Orthopedic Surgeon In Critical Condition After Rickenbacker Bike Crash* Dr. Gilbert Beauperthuy-Rojas was rushed to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center after a driver struck him while he was cycling on the Rickenbacker Causeway Saturday morning. The 63-year-old orthopedic surgeon with HCA Florida Mercy Hospital was riding alone in the designated bike lane around 8:30 a.m. near 3501 Rickenbacker Causeway when an SUV hit him. Family members say he has liver and kidney lacerations, cuts across his body, and a spinal cord injury. As of Monday, he had no movement from the waist down. He has ridden that same Saturday route for 16 years with his brother-in-law and a friend. This time he was by himself. Miami Police said the driver is cooperating. The investigation is ongoing. Colleagues describe him as a longtime sports-injury and orthopedic specialist and former president of the Miami Orthopaedic Society. Mercy Hospital’s CEO said the hospital family is with him and his loved ones.
