Nixon Calls Fetal Rights “Devastating,” Tried To Cut Pregnancy Site Funding Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon said recognizing “basic rights” for a fetus would be “devastating,” and she tried to strip state money from a Florida pregnancy resource website because it does not promote abortion. In a newly surfaced clip, the Jacksonville Democrat and state representative warned that Republicans could advance a bill treating a fetus or zygote as a person. “A fetus having basic rights […] that’s going to be devastating,” Nixon said. She also targeted Strong Florida Moms, a site launched by the Florida Department of Health and the Department of Children and Families. It offers pregnancy, health care, and parenting resources for Florida families and does not direct users toward abortion. Nixon said she filed an amendment to carve out the funding. “They basically want to encourage people to not go through with abortions,” she said. Nixon, a Democratic Socialists of America member, is the party’s nominee against Sen. Ashley Moody this November. She previously voted against Florida’s six-week abortion limit. Florida Scoop’s Take: The comments put a clear marker on the table. Voters now have her words, not just the talking points.
