Metals traders are heading for another exceptionally profitable year, Bloomberg reported Saturday, as several major trading houses approach or set records. Trafigura made around $2 billion in metals-trading profit in its financial year ended in September, according to people familiar with the matter, rather than an official company disclosure. Glencore has also enjoyed strong trading profits, although a $480 million provision related to iron-ore trader Radiant World weighed on its overall results. Mercuria is on track to match or beat last year's operating profit of more than $300 million after investing over $4 billion across metals deals. The gains show how lucrative the metals business has become for the world's commodity-trading firms.
