*Mayor Mamdani Opens 50-Year-Old Time Capsule Left by Mayor Beame, Unveils $185 Million Plant Upgrade* Fifty years to the day after Mayor Abraham Beame, New York City’s first Jewish mayor, sealed a time capsule in the cornerstone of the Port Richmond Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility on Richmond Terrace, Mayor Zohran Mamdani opened it on Wednesday. Inside were a letter from Beame, the Oct. 21, 1976 edition of the Staten Island Advance, a 1976 coin collection and the plant’s original blueprints. Mamdani also announced a $185 million project to modernize the plant, which serves about 200,000 Staten Islanders and still runs on much of its original 1976 equipment. Plant staff had unsealed the box around February but left everything inside untouched so the mayor would be the first to see it. *_Join the Island Media WhatsApp Status_* https://wa.me/19297271071?text=Subscribe *_Join the Island News and Updates group_* https://chat.whatsapp.com/Bi5MGP3Nx1qJUoVkKmYW5j
