Great Kills Park Cleanup Clears Major Hurdle NYC and the National Park Service have signed a funding and implementation agreement to advance the radioactive cleanup at Great Kills Park, where contamination has affected more than 200 acres. The city will fund and complete the work, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ready to carry it out on the city’s behalf. The contamination, first discovered in 2005, is linked to radioactive material in waste used to create parkland in the 1940s. Completing the cleanup would allow stalled levee and tide-gate sections of the East Shore Seawall to move forward. No construction start date was announced.
