Local Wildlife: Tiny Turtles Get a Fresh Start Forty-seven baby diamondback terrapins were released at Freshkills Park yesterday after their eggs were protected from predators at the Staten Island Zoo and in special enclosures at the park. Researchers say predators had previously destroyed every monitored nest at the North Park site before protection efforts began. The project, led by the zoo and Freshkills Park Alliance, started last year. About 25 local students helped with the release and preparations, returning the hatchlings to their natural habitat.
