German Chancellor Merz Cancels UN Trip Amid Political Crisis German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has canceled his trip to next week’s UN General Assembly in New York as political pressure mounts at home. The cancellation comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment for Israel, with the UN gathering expected to feature major debate over Israel and the Middle East. Politico reports that intense discussions are underway in Berlin over Merz’s political future ahead of Sunday’s regional elections. His CDU also faces the possibility of failing to cross the electoral threshold in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the first time.
