*New Sonar Images Reveal Altalena Wreck Off Israel’s Coast* New 2026 sonar imagery of the Altalena wreck has been compared with an aerial photograph taken during the dramatic 1948 confrontation off the coast of Tel Aviv. The documentation was produced as part of a project by Israel’s Ministry of Heritage, headed by Minister Amichai Eliyahu, together with the Survey of Israel. The Altalena was an Irgun arms ship that was shelled during a confrontation with the newly established IDF in June 1948.
