Altalena Wreck Located 78 Years After Historic 1948 Affair Israel’s Heritage Ministry says a maritime search operation has located the wreck of the Altalena, 78 years after the ship became one of the most dramatic symbols of Israel’s early history. According to Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, the wreck was identified overnight at a depth of approximately 503 meters off Israel’s coast. The search operation has reportedly cost about NIS 1 million so far. The Irgun arms ship was shelled by the newly formed IDF off Tel Aviv in June 1948.
