*EU and Canada Draw Closer as Tensions With Trump Grow* European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed opening the door for Canada to become the EU’s first-ever “associate member,” as Ottawa and Brussels deepen ties amid growing tensions with President Trump’s administration. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney received a standing ovation in the European Parliament as von der Leyen called for closer cooperation on trade, defense, technology, energy and the Arctic. The proposed status does not currently exist under EU treaties, and even EU diplomats say its meaning remains unclear. Any formal arrangement would ultimately require approval from EU member states.
