A prominent Muslim cleric associated with the Muslim Brotherhood has credited Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel with helping create the political environment that led to the rise of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdulrahman El-Sayed. Ali al-Qaradaghi, secretary general of the Qatar-based International Union for Muslim Scholars, made the remarks during a conference in Turkey in August, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI.
