LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Tuesday, a stunning setback for the Saudi-backed league that spent more than $5 billion since launching in 2022 to challenge the PGA Tour. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund ended its financial backing after the 2026 season, leaving LIV with between $500 million and $1 billion in liabilities. The bankruptcy does not necessarily mean LIV is finished. The league plans a smaller “LIV 2.0” with new investors and potentially majority player ownership. But the filing is a dramatic reversal for a league that used enormous contracts and signing bonuses to attract many of golf’s biggest stars.
