Florida state Sen. Bryan Avila, the son of Cuban exiles and a longtime Republican lawmaker from Miami-Dade County, is bringing a strong pro-Israel record and ties to South Florida’s Jewish community to the Republican ticket after U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds selected him Tuesday as his running mate in the race for governor. Donalds announced Avila as his choice for lieutenant governor at a campaign event at Miami’s Freedom Tower, praising him as a conservative, military officer and public servant who understands the experience of families who fled communism.
