On Friday, The Associated Press profiled India's last remaining Jews, Keith Hallegua and Elias “Babu” Josephai, who are working to preserve the centuries-old legacy of the Cochin Jewish community as its numbers dwindle. Hallegua is the last local congregant of Kochi's 458-year-old Paradesi Synagogue and the only Jew still living in the city's historic Jew Town. Josephai maintains the centuries-old Kadavumbagam Synagogue, preserving the traditions of the Malabari Jewish community. Most of Kochi's Jews emigrated to Israel in the 1950s, leaving behind synagogues, cemeteries and homes. Fewer than 5,000 Jews remain in India today.
