FORMER GERMAN INTELLIGENCE CHIEF ARRESTED ON ESPIONAGE SUSPICION: Former BND chief August Hanning, who led Germany's foreign intelligence service from 1998 to 2005, was reportedly arrested Tuesday on suspicion of treasonous espionage, spying out state secrets and attempted treason, federal prosecutors said. They allege that his former chief of staff, Manfred D., supplied him with about 2,000 classified documents in exchange for payment, and that in one case Hanning used the material to draft an analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligence service. Prosecutors say it remains to be determined whether the material reached its intended recipient. They have not named the country involved. Manfred D. was also arrested.
