Thirty-eight competitors took part Saturday in a grave-digging contest in a northern Hungarian cemetery, racing to dig graves that met exact specifications. The contest, organized by the Hungarian Association of Cemetery Maintainers and Operators, aims to showcase the skills involved in the trade while breaking taboos surrounding death. Nineteen two-person teams battled through hard, dry soil in Nyergesújfalu. The winning team, Róbert Nagy and László Kiss, finished in 1 hour, 21 minutes. The graves had to be 5½ feet deep, 6½ feet long and 2.6 feet wide. The winners split a prize of about $640.
