🐄 U.S. CATTLE HERD HITS 75-YEAR LOW: The U.S. cattle herd fell to 86.2 million head as of January 1, 2026, its smallest level in 75 years and down more than 8 million from 2019 after years of drought, high feed costs and herd liquidation. The shortage is pushing beef prices higher and squeezing meatpackers, with some plants slated for closure. Although July data showed early signs of herd rebuilding, restoring cattle supplies takes years, meaning elevated beef prices could persist for some time.
