For the first time ever, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro area has surpassed the New York City metro area in cost of living, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis' latest Regional Price Parities report. Miami scored 114.155 compared with 112.563 for the New York metro, making it the second most expensive metro area in the U.S. after the San Francisco Bay Area. The surge has been driven by sharply rising housing costs, insurance, private-school tuition, restaurant prices, and other everyday expenses. Since 2019, consumer prices in the Miami area have risen 36%, while home prices have jumped 79% since the pandemic, according to BLS and S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller data cited by Bloomberg.
