Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts announced Wednesday that six people had been arrested in connection with an alleged scheme that arranged hundreds of sham marriages to obtain immigration benefits unlawfully. U.S. Attorney Leah Foley identified Jennifer Gonzales, a U.S. citizen born in the United States, as the alleged organizer of the operation. Prosecutors said the scheme had been running for more than a decade. According to Foley, Gonzales allegedly charged between $38,000 and $40,000 for each arranged marriage, facilitating an estimated 18 to 20 marriages annually. Authorities said the operation generated more than $6 million in profits.
